Celebrating the 15-Year Anniversary of Machine Head’s Memorable Mayhem Fest Performance in Camden, NJ

In 2011, the metal community was on the brink of witnessing the release of Machine Head’s highly anticipated album, Unto the Locust. To commemorate this milestone, I look back fondly on their electrifying performance during that year’s Mayhem Fest, held in the parking lot of the Susquehanna Bank Center in Camden, New Jersey, on July 31.

That summer, while most attendees focused on the stage acts, I found myself immersed in the festival’s press zone, engaging with fellow journalists and conducting interviews with bands—including a memorable chat with Machine Head’s then bassist, Adam Duce. Nonetheless, it was impossible to ignore the buzz surrounding Machine Head’s performance. As they shared the main stage rotation with bands like Trivium and In Flames, their set in the parking lot stood out as a highlight during the festival tour.

This particular date marked a moment when Machine Head was arguably at the peak of their creative and live performance prowess. Robb Flynn and his band demonstrated why many critics and fans alike regarded them as leaders in modern metal during 2011. Their commanding presence and raw energy on stage reaffirmed their status in the metal world, just months before the release of their groundbreaking album.

For those interested in visual memories, I’ve included photos from that performance in a recent video compilation. Additionally, stay tuned for more stories and insights from that era—including some nostalgic tales like my first encounter with Robb Flynn at the inaugural Mayhem Fest in Camden back in 2008.

Reflecting on this anniversary serves as a reminder of Machine Head’s influential role in shaping the modern metal scene—and the unforgettable moments that defined their career during this pivotal time.
