Rediscovering “Sledgehammer”: A Musical Revival

Musicians often find themselves revisiting old favorites, and for many, certain songs hold a special place in their creative journey. Recently, I had the opportunity to revisit a classic track that I hadn’t performed in years—Peter Gabriel’s “Sledgehammer.”

In my early days of using MIDI sounds and looping techniques, I frequently covered this song. The process of setting up the intricate loops was time-consuming, which ultimately led me to set it aside. However, a recent live gig brought a fresh perspective. Some friends who attended encouraged me to give it another shot, and I decided to embrace the challenge.

Due to time constraints, I skipped the extensive seven-minute setup process showcased in this video, but I can attest that re-engaging with this piece was an absolute joy. Every sound used for the performance was meticulously crafted from scratch and looped to build the entire arrangement.

Performing music that pushes boundaries and allows for experimentation is always rewarding. Revisiting “Sledgehammer” reminded me of the creative potential within live performances—where improvisation, technical skills, and passion converge to produce a memorable experience.

For fellow musicians and enthusiasts, I encourage exploring your back catalog of covers and arrangements. Sometimes, the reward of reconnecting with an old favorite is well worth the effort.
